"Set in the backdrop of the chaotic, volatile events in Russia at the end of the Cold War, A Train To Potevka will
take you on an incredible, winter's journey across Great Mother Russia
along the 6,000-mile Trans-Siberian Railway. This fascinating story
about an American intelligence agent from a small town in the Rockies
is a tale of failed espionage, escape, and survival."
There were over 100 station stops and it crossed eleven time zones. Quite a journey!
I didn't find it fascinating but it was a good quick read. I borrowed the book and won't be buying my own copy.
What I enjoy most is discussing it with friends.
I love this little book club.
It was interesting. In the book, a miracle occurs. I just accepted it as a miracle and enjoyed the wonder of it all, while several book club friends spent much thought trying to figure out just how that all occurred.
For me, I was cold the entire time I read it and wanted to wrap up in a nice warm blanket. Russia is COLD.
It was insightful to get a feel for the oppression of communism. I don't even pretend to comprehend what it is really like, but it did cause me to ponder.
I could never work for the CIA..I would get sweaty hands just filling out the application. If I am into mischief, my husband walks in the room and asks, "What is going on here?" I don't hide secrets well.
People are the same the world around...all want to be able to provide for their families. Because of the lack of trust during the cold war in Russia, the people came across as private and withdrawn, but that is learned behavior - not inherit-ant, as was demonstrated by a young boy on the train.
I am grateful to live in America, land of the free. I am grateful for a full refrigerator. I am grateful for modern transportation.
Next we are reading "The Word We Live By, Your Annotated Guide to the Constitution" by Linda R Monk. It looks a lot like a text book to me and I groaned. Our group leader said it would be good for me. I love that. She is such a great leader....so...I guess I will dive into something that is good for me. I want to be able to participate in the discussion.
